Thoughts on one night at karaoke
I recently started going to a bar that does karaoke nights every week, and I went to my first and currently only one ever in my entire life.
There were decidedly two types of people at this event. People who came with a group, who by and large couldn't sing well, but whose friends cheered and sang along and brought the energy of the room up; and people who came alone, who by and large were excellent performers, and who were more or less treated as background music. It was very strange to see.
I, having come alone, and being a hobbyist singer in my own time, found myself in the second category, and indeed when I went up to sing, people tuned out and conversed among themselves -- not making fun of me or anything, just kind of letting me do my thing.
I'm not going to put forth a conclusion here. I think the observation is enough.
I'm going again tonight, I think.
